Bren Professor of Medical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and KNI-affiliated faculty member Lihong Wang gives Earnest C. Watson Lecture on recent research.
On November 28 at 8 pm, Professor Lihong Wang will give the Earnest C. Watson lecture on the "World's Deepest-Penetration and Fastest Optical Cameras". The Wang lab has developed compressed ultrafast photography that records 10 trillion frames per second, making it the fastest optical camera and capable of capturing light propogation, the fastest phenomenon in the universe. Professor Wang will also touch on his lab's work on photoacoustic tomography, which allows scientists to peer deep into biological tissue. "Combining rich optical contrast and scalable ultrasonic resolution, photoacoustic imaging is the only modality capable of providing multiscale high-resolution structural, functional, metabolic, and molecular imaging of organelles, cells, tissues, and organs as well as small-animal organisms in vivo. Broad applications include early-cancer detection, surgical guidance, and brain imaging. For example, it can help surgeons effectively remove breast cancer lumps, reducing the need for follow-up surgeries. Professor Wang's Monte Carlo model of photon transport in scattering media is used worldwide as a standard tool" (EAS website).

About the Series
Since 1922, The Earnest C. Watson Lecture Series has has brought Caltech's most innovative scientific research to the public. The series is named for Earnest C. Watson, a professor of physics at Caltech from 1919 until 1959. Spotlighting a small selection of the pioneering research Caltech's faculty is currently conducting, the Watson Lectures are geared toward a general audience, as part of the Institute's ongoing commitment to benefiting the local community through education and outreach.
