In this special Watson Lecture Series, Andrei Faraon, recipient of the 2016 KNI-Wheatley Scholar program, will discuss his recent research achievements in Flat Metasurface Optics.
"For hundreds of years, most optical elements like lenses and polarizers have been fabricated using carefully polished crystals or pieces of glass and assembled in optical systems such as cameras and microscopes. In this talk, Andrei Faraon will discuss how nanotechnology enables new ways of making optical components using fabrication processes already developed in the semiconductor industry. These nano-patterned structures, named optical metasurfaces, allow for extreme miniaturization of optical systems with applications in consumer electronics and medical devices."

About the Speaker
Dr. Andrei Faraon (B.S. in Physics, Caltech 2004; PhD in Applied Physics, Stanford 2009) is Assistant Professor of Applied Physics Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science. His laboratory specializes in developing nanophotonic technologies for devices that operate close to the fundamental limit of light-matter interaction, with applications in imaging, sensing and quantum information processing. He is the recipient of the 2015 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2015 Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Award, and the 2016 Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. In 2016, Faron was named the inaugural KNI-Wheatley Scholar in Nanoscience, established by Charles and Judith Wheatley and the Kavli Nanoscience Institute.
